How to Improve Open Graph Metadata

Open Graph and Twitter tags control how a link is represented when shared and are sometimes used by other systems as structured hints.

The issue

Pages are missing og:title/description/image or Twitter card tags, or values disagree with the page title/description.

Why it matters

Inconsistent or missing OG data produces poor or wrong previews and weakens a page's representation.

Common mistakes

  • No og:image, or an image that 404s.
  • OG values inconsistent with the <title>/meta description.
  • Missing twitter:card type.
  • Relative OG URLs instead of absolute https.

Practical recommendations

  • Set og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, og:type, og:site_name.
  • Use an absolute https og:image that exists.
  • Mirror the page's real title/description.
  • Add twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image.

After every significant deploy, and periodically as content changes.
